You want to balance the silhouette of the dress with the design of your bouquet. If you are wearing a ballroom dress and opt for a small bouquet, it throws off the balance of the two.

This plays into our first piece of advice. If your wedding dress has beautiful details on the skirt that you want to show off, you don’t want to choose a trailing bouquet that will hide those features. However, if you have a more sleek dress with a dramatic train, you may want to opt for a bouquet with some trailing details to add balance to your look. 

Find out what flowers are in season on your wedding day

This one can be tricky. When I got married I had my heart set on peonies. However, they were out of season. If you find yourself in this situation be prepared to spend a higher price tag for some stems that you absolutely want or it is time to get creative. Your florist can offer some alternative ideas to help you achieve a similar look. Another thing to consider is that some flowers such as anemones are delicate and lovely. However, in some environments, like the desert here in Arizona, some more delicate blooms don’t fare well. They will quickly wilt and you may be disappointed with how your bouquet photographs. So consider the time of year you are getting married and the heartiness of your flowers. 

Consider the exact color of your wedding dress

When choosing a bouquet to match your dress remember there are so many shades of a color. This is particularly important with whites, ivories, and creams. There are so many different shades, your florists can recommend the right type of bloom to work well with the exact color of your dress and your bridesmaid’s dresses. Remember to take swatches if you have them.

Choose a comfortable bouquet 

You will be holding your bouquet all day long. Remember to make sure it is comfortable to hold and that it isn’t too heavy.  When choosing your wedding bouquet it is important to remember that you can have the most incredible design, but if you can’t hold it, what is the point?

Add a personal touch

If you have flowers that hold a special meaning to you, it could be nice to incorporate those blooms into your bouquet.  Adding a family heirloom such as an antique brooch, a lace hanky or something else that holds personal meaning to your bouquet adds lovely details to your bouquet as well.
